I always knew Goose was better than Maverick.

How do I know I'm an alcoholic? I'm sitting in my cube on a Friday morning, jonesing for some water and a nap, dreaming about a certain beer I had last night. It started out like any other night at the Daily Pint on Pico. My favorite "scotch-beer-dive-but-not-really-because-it's-trendy" bar. I order a Stone IPA because I'm overwhelmed by the number of beers on tap and can't pick one and I'm running out of time oh god oh god by the time I order it's going to be the next millennium or worse... last call. I dodge a herd of plaid-wearing folk. I wonder why I forgot to wear plaid. Stripes? Really? A momentary lapse of reason.

Anyway, I'm sipping my trusty Stone IPA and talking to some guy from Chicago. He's one of those story-teller types. Even the smallest anectode from his life sounds like a chapter out of the Iliad on acid with a side serving of Shakespearean romance and a James Cameron blockbuster with a cherry on top for dessert. You aren't sure where the truth ends and fantasy begins.

He starts telling me about how they have a microbrew on tap from his home town, and convinces me that we should try it. Allegedly, the brewery is located on the site of a former dumpster in Chicago. Trash somehow accumulated into a pile shaped like a goose, and the site earned the nickname "goose island." Now Goose Island is brewery. Sounds like a recipe for unsanitary dumpster flavored beer to me, but I'll go with it. His version of the story is much longer and more dramatic, but it's too early in the morning for intricasies. Bottom line: the Daily Pint has one of their beers on tap, it's called Matilda. A Belgian style pale ale that the Daily Pint serves in a Chimay glass. I start to wish I ordered a Chimay, longing for familiar deliciousness. Then, I take my first sip.

Matilda. You are an orgasm in my mouth. I'm not going to pretend I can describe the flavors and yeast and whatever stuff. Just know, Goose Island Matilda is the greatest beer I've ever tasted.

Go try it. For official information from the official website: www.gooseisland.com/pages/matilda/25.php
